Galisteo Basin Preserve- Improvements to the Trail Network @ Cowboy Shack

Volunteers will head out to evaluate and fix identified drainage issues on the existing trail network. After enjoying lunch on the trail, volunteers will complete their work by 1:30 pm.

Food + Supplies: Commonweal will provide light snacks, water and all necessary trail-finishing tools. The Trails Alliance of Santa Fe and the Fat Tire Society have generously donated use of their tools for these events.

Work Requirements and Cautions: Trail building is a moderately strenuous activity. Please wear pants, long-sleeve shirt, hat and heavy work boots.

Bring: A sack lunch, sunscreen, water bottle and work gloves.

Space for each event is limited to 15 volunteers. To register for either day, please email Gretchen Grogan at gretchen.grogan@commonwealconservancy.org or call her at (505) 982-0071, ext. 106. Please title your email message: RSVP for Trail Maintenance.

Easy hike.

Approximately 1.5 miles.

400 feet elevation.

Arroyo Hondo – Upper Parking Area located at the end of Old Agua Fria Rd. From the Old Pecos Trail (OPT) exit of I-25 drive, drive South until OPT dead ends at the stop sign at Old Agua Fria Road East. Turn left onto Old Agua Fria Rd. E, drive over cattle-guard where dirt turns into pavement, parking is 200 yards on the right.

Cruising Tierra Contenta’s Arroyo Chamiso Trail

The Second Annual Southside Community Cruise:  A slow bike ride with breaks, approximately eight miles, including visits to Tierra Contenta’s Arroyo Chamiso Trail, the County River Trail / Camino Real, the City’s M.R.C. Approximately 8 miles.

2400 ft. Elevation to Placer Peak

The Ortiz Mountains Educational Preserve consists of 1,350 acres in the Ortiz Mountains, including Placer Peak, the highest peak in the Ortiz range at 8,897 feet. The Preserve contains several historic mine shafts from the New Mexico gold rush in the early mid-nineteenth century. The Preserve is located approximately 30 miles southwest of Santa Fe off the Turquoise Trail scenic byway.
