La Tierra Trails Work Day @ Junction 22 Trailhead
Aug 17 @ 8:30 am – 11:30 am

Maintenance work to address erosion issues on La Tierra Trails.  We will be working in the southwest corner of La Tierra Trails, north of the Motocross Track.  We will meet at 8:30 at the small trailhead parking lot on the way to the Motocross Track, which is the location of “Junction 22” (click on illustration, or see full La Tierra Trails Map).

Driving directions: Head west on the Relief Route from Camino de los Montoyas and take the first right, which is an intersection with a road identified a “Euhram Rd.” on Google Maps (but I think there is no sign).  Then take your first left, just before this road ends, onto the dirt road that provides access to the motocross track.  Junction 22 trailhead will be on your right.

If you are coming from the west on the Relief Route, there is no direct access to “Euhram Rd.” – you will need to pull a U-turn at Camino de los Montoyas and follow the directions above.

Let me know if you’d like to join us.  Contact Tim Rogers at tim@sfct.org or (505) 989-7019.  Bring work boots, preferably long pants, sun protection, snacks, and water.

Winsor Re-route
Aug 20 @ 8:30 am – 1:00 pm

Forest staff and volunteers finish a re-route project on a portion of the Winsor National Recreation Trail by closing off the old section of trail for re-vegetation. The newly constructed re-route will reduce erosion and reduce conflict between recreationists who use the Forest for different activities. Volunteers will meet at the Jinja Bar & Bistro parking lot in Santa Fe at 8:30 a.m.

Lunch will be provided and work hours are 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Volunteers should wear long sleeves, long pants, above-ankle non-skid boots and leather gloves to protect them from terrain that can be thorny and rocky. Please bring a backpack with sunscreen and at least two quarts of water. Tools and hard hats will be provided by the Santa Fe National Forest.

For additional information, please contact Jennifer Sublett, Española District Volunteer Coordinator, at jasublett@fs.fed.us or 505-753-7331. Volunteers should RSVP to Jennifer so the Forest Service can provide lunches, tools and hardhats for all participants.

Install Trail Signs at Galisteo Basin Preserve @ Galisteo Basin Cowboy Shack
Aug 28 @ 8:30 am

Commonweal/GBP is planning on installing 20-25 user signs on the GBP trail system on Saturday, August 27th, and need another 4-5 volunteers to help make it happen. The are installing 4×4 posts near intersections of trails with different usages. The signs say “THIS TRAIL IS OPEN TO” followed by images for hikers, bikers, and equestrians, as appropriate. This is being supported by the Santa Fe Horse Coalition riders, some of whom will also be helping install the signs. Exact time is TBD, but most likely 8 or 8:30 until done, hopefully by noon.

Let me know if you can help out.

Thanks,

Brent Bonwell @ brent@bonwell.org
